Ouch

I hope that was just not having my basketball legs under me yet, and not age. It was pretty brutal this morning.

The bad:
  • Pretty much every time I tried to drive, I got stuffed. I just had no spring in my step - it was like I knew what I wanted to do, but my body couldn't do it.
  • I missed everything in sight. I remember (in the olden days!) being pretty much dependable from just inside the three point line on in. I had a stretch this morning where I am positive I missed more than 10 in a row.

The good:

  • When I was not driving, I seemed to be able to get any open look I wanted. That may have had something to do with them not thinking I was worth covering (see the missing, above), but people usually aren't as focused in on your bad day as you are yourself, so I don't know if they were familiar with me enough to make that sort of judgement.

I also got totally gassed. I can go out and run four miles without thinking twice, but Mixx is right - this is a toally different sort of exercise. And all those baskets (actually, not all that many baskets) I've been shooting in the back yard over the past seven years don't do a whole lot to prepare you for a full-court game of four on four.

I really do think a lot of it has to do with re-familiarizing myself with the game - and my limitations. And I do think/hope that whole "getting my b-ball legs under me" thing plays a part, too. I probably won't ever be able to do what I used to, in terms of driving the lane. But I can pick my spots, start hitting shots, and distribute the ball.

We'll see if I can have a better outing next week.

The last I played was last fall - against a college crowd.

This week I went for my first run of the year - miserable, slow, tired, sucked - the only thing good was the music.

I am sure your shot, at least, will come back.

In other news, if I may, and this will not help basketball or running performance (unless I aspire for the Captain's greatness) - I am now the holder of a hard yellow plastic container filled to the brim with the first season of a special little show you might know something about.

Other news indeed.

Even playing regularly, I go through streaks of shooting. Right now I'm on a good streak, making 75% of shots of 15ft or less, though my three point shot is even more inconsistent than my other shot.

I went through a stretch this late winter/spring where I had to wear a flexible brace on my right wrist, having fallen badly on ice back in January. At some point in there I felt a weird sensation in my left need (sort of warm and tingly) and now I'm wearing a flexible brace on that. The knee I may just resolve to brace for eternity. The wrist took about three months, but now it feels completely healed. It sucks to get old.

I'm sure you'll get your basketball legs back.

We've had a good turn out in my group and so we've mostly been playing 5 on 5, on a court probably 80% of a full sized court. It's crowded, but I prefer it to 4 on 4. It makes you work harder to get a good shot.

Left knee that is.

Wow, I don't think I'd ever like 5 on 5 more than 4 on 4. Particularly on a smallish court.

You have to REALLY work harder to get your shot when you're 5'10'. And when you've lost what little leaping ability you once had.

Passing baby, passing.
