...from automakers to financial institutions to retail developers...and not that I'm even necessarily against the bailouts, but...
I wonder how often these CEOs, have, in their entire personal lives until this point in history, decried the bailing out of ANYBODY by the government.

that is "the" wondering
amazing really
Among several worthwhile wonderings.
I think it's remarkable the sharp drop in consequences the farther you move up the ladder and the larger the organization you run.
Bush is a great example. He's been failing up with essentially no consequences his entire life.
All sorts of CEOs that run their corporations extremely poorly walk away with 7, 8 or 9 figure golden parachutes. If most people were that shitty at their jobs they would be fired or at least fester in middle management for their entire lives.
The silver lining, as it were, is that the general populace now seems to be hep to that scene, and are not happy about it. Not that general public discontent will change much. But this particular musing has more to do with the very simple principle that Republicans seem to have a very sudden swing on their worldview as soon as they are in need of, or can benefit from, government help and intervention.
It's been stunning to listen to my mom (Mrs. anti-New Deal) extoll the virtues of Medicare, now that my dad needs truckloads of huge metal oxygen containers delivered to their house every week.
Right.
My favorite quote - who knows if it's even real - in this vein, a woman in Louisiana imploring to keep government out of her Medicare.
Ooof.
