Akin to how the GOP seems to run campaigns (and govern) on the premise that people just aren't paying all that much attention, they seem to think that people are willing to vote for a person based on a very superficial quality (be that race or gender) unrelated to policy that matters in their constituents' lives. This reminds me, by the way, of the line from U2's "The Fly" (It's no secret that a liar won't believe anyone else).
Anyway, This is a quick post, so I don't enter very many instances as evidence, other than what we can witness from the last two campaigns against Barack Obama.
In 2004, there was Alan Keyes.
And now, Sarah Palin.

The worst sort of cynical pandering, possibly ever.
Not to say that it might not be successful. We'll see how she does and how easily manipulated the American people are.
At the risk of being extremely offensive...her current 'look' is strikingly reminiscent of many 'naughty' librarians. Off with the glasses, let the hair down...this may have a greater impact on the male pervert vote than it does on the female vote of any kind.
And that look is calculated - she was intentionally going for a frumpier look, something that perhaps is necessary to be taken seriously as an attractive female politician.
She's ugly on the inside, that's for sure.
I'm not sure I'm ready to say that. I'm hearing ugly things about her from the left, for sure. But that's to be expected.
I think she's woefully unqualified for the Vice Presidency, and that the pick of her is a shameless pander. And I would disagree with her policy positions in probably about 90% instances. But geez - if there's to be one faint glimmer of hope that, truly, people can be on opposite sides of the political spectrum and try to find common ground, I've got to give her more than two days before I come to that conclusion.
That choice she & her husband made to carry her down symdrome child to full term - even abortion rights activists would have to credit her for walking the walk on that one.
I was unfair to say she's ugly on the inside, but I'm reasonably confident her view of the world is almost completely opposite of my own.
No question her decision to carry her child to term is an admirable one, especially as a 44 year old and already the mother of 4 children.
Her views on the teaching of creationism on an equal level with evolution are completely expected, though still very very sad.
She's been less than forthcoming about both the realities of drilling in ANWR and her actual role in killing the bridge to nowhere (before it before she was against it).
She seems to have used her power as governor to try to get her ex brother-in-law fired from the Alaska State Patrol, and when the head of safety refused to do it, had him fired and replaced by a man with several sexual harassment charges. All of this is being investigated by the AK legislature as we speak, and is minor in the scheme of Alaska political corruption but still less than admirable.
She doesn't like polar bears either.
It's evident to me now... whenever I travel to Minneapolis, shit just happens. This week, while I'm away from my usual internet connection and just reading the local paper, Palin gets the VP nod, the media goes nuts, and I'm at the fair.
Anyway, over at the Huffington Post, reports are now in that if any vetting on Palin was done, it was done between tee-off time and and the fourth hole. Likely with an iPhone.
iPhone?
Lucky to have 'the google', let alone mobile 'the google'.
My favorite part is her apparent association with an Alaskan separatist party (AIP).
Yeah, that's great. So far at the RNC she's the Energizer. Also, The Daily Show made the "sexy librarian" comparison.
I figured a secondary McCain staffer did the vetting, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and the iPhone.
