More Waterloo News, of a Different Sort

Two pretty big things:

One, my dad's health is poor. He's had some type of blood/oxygen thing going on for some time that they've actually had some trouble pinpointing; but his lungs have been quite stressed, and he's not able to catch his breath after even some pretty low key activity. They've finally got him on oxygen 24 hours a day (like, a machine with a tether and a tank and the whole nine yards). I'm not sure where all this is headed, but I don't have a very good feeling about it. You guys have known him personally, to various extents, throughout the years - so, keep him in your thoughts, as you are able.

Two, my parents' house just sold. I'm wondering if the fact they were high & dry through the recent flooding made their neighborhood suddenly seem like a very desireable location or what, but there it is. Mind-blowing, as again - this is the only house I have ever known them in. They still haven't landed on the apartment or condo to which they'll be moving, but that'll be figured out sooner as opposed to later, one would think.

Momentous news.

Best wishes to your dad, for all the jokes about bowls of ice cream, he's always been an 'elder' most worthy of respect. One of those adults that you never consider calling by their first name, instead unthinkingly using the formal address. And even with his air of authority, I remember him most often having a quirky grin on his face. Truly a good egg.

I will definitely keep your dad in my thoughts.

And the house...

My dad would have been a good starship captain, I always thought. He wouldn't have been so good with the technology (you know, when everyone else on the bridge is knocked unconscious and he would need to manually modulate phase distortions, and that sort of thing), but he definitely has a confident demeanor of command. Something I have never and will never have.

Weird - in my youth, I remember him as mostly a stern figure that have just a few joys - a bowl of ice cream, Spring Break, baseball. His retirement and grandfathering years have definitely been the ones where the quirky grin and twinkle in his eye have manifested themselves. I'm so glad Sharon and my girls have had a chance to experience him in his truly golden years.

I think of your parents often. I don't know if it because I still live here and travel close to their old residence enough or what, but I do think of them a lot.

I will still think of them and I will pray for your mom and dad.

Does your dad have congestive heart failure? That's what my grandma has. She is on oxygen full-time too. The littlest activity can get her winded.

There's heart issues, too, which might be playing into this (he's regularly seeing a cardiologist), but the primary oxygen issue they know about right now has to do with scarring of his lungs.

T-Clog: I might be making some multiple trips down over the next month or so. One or more of those times I might be looking for a little late-nite stress relief. You game?

I have only known your dad fleetingly, and I think his notion of me was that I was disturbed young man. You've mentioned his medical needs before, and so I will keep your dad in my thoughts, prayers as well.

It's been heartening to know they've been in the same house, remaining stable there for so long. So the change must be disorienting, to say the least.

I think it was that quality of my dad that Mixdorf alluded to - never considering calling him by his first name - that could be a bit intimidating/disconcerting to young people at times. You're probably not alone (even among this group) in feelnig that he thought you were a disturbed young man. I don't think it was actually the case.

On the chance - I think it's going to be a super-positive one, when it happens, though. The last thing they need to worry about is home maintenance. At the place they're most looking at: 3 meals a day would be provided, they'll have their own little cottage, only one floor, dishwasher, little patio in the back. An all-around good deal.
