Yay!

Obama wins. 220,000 Democrats turn out!!! That's, like, 1/10 of all Iowans.

It'd be interesting to know how many Republicans came (but, Mixx, I don't feel I have the time to seek out the answer). I do have a theory that they are much less motivated, all but admitting that their field of potential candidates sucks balls.

I also have a theory that the better Obama does, the better Obama will do. I think a lot of groups of people with traditionally low percentages of turnout (black people, young people) will consider jumping on this bandwagon when it looks like the possibility of him actually winning the nomination looks realistic. When I learned over Christmas that Obama was at the top of my dad's list, it was one of my first, "My God, this could actually happen" moment.

I was relieved and happy with the turnout.

Interesting thing, this world of technology. I walked out of a tiny gym after the caucus, and logged on to MSNBC and other news sites, and read how what took place down my street happened pretty much all over the state.

R's had about half the turnout, and their caucus system is more like a primary, show up vote leave, rather than the bizzaro (but interesting) D version.

Wow. Your dad and Obama - that's great.

Combining turnout of both D's and R's and all three D's get more votes than Huckabee. This is bad bad news for R's.

The Republicans are setting up for an internal shitstorm unlike anything they've seen in decades. The movers of their party hate McCain (against tax cuts and for campaign finance reform) and really hate the evangelicals (they're just pawns to them). Romney remains the best hope of the normal crew that runs things, but they may have lost control of their party this time...maybe. Don't be surprised to learn of some dastardly sabotaging of both McCain and Huckabee by shadowy Swift Boat types.

Whoever carries the day for the Democrats will certainly see some serious swift-boat techniques. Should be disgusting and interesting. Kerry's tactic, which was to take the high road and not address the attacks until too late, turned out to be one of his numerous blunders. Let's not be fooled again.

For now I think the Republicans will be torpedoing one another...the attacks of Democrats will come once they've killed off Huck and McCain.
