Take-Your-Breath-Away Cold

Temps in the Twin Cities ranging from minus 15 to minus 20 degrees this morning.

I don't think we've seen it like this since, like, 1994.

Very cold. You can tell your grandkids that when you were young you remember when you had to breathe cold air as a baby just feel like your alive, and how you walked to school 30 miles each way while it was -100 degrees. Yes I remember 94', it was damn cold. They closed ISU for a day because the windchill was -80.

3 degrees here this fine morning.

I have no memory of that 1994 cold snap.

In '94: About half the cars in the Musicland warehouse parking lot were able to start after work. The Caprice Classic Station Wagon was one of 'em. 29 degrees below zero air temp, minus 79 windchill is what I recall. Gibbs got the day off from dragging brush and we both went cross country skiing. I had a beard and, by the time I was done, my face looked like a cross between the faces of Shackleton (after they ate their dogs) and Old Man Winter from the Kris Kringle claymation movie.

X-country skiing at -80 wind chill is right up there on the list of really dangerous buffoonery.

Everyone at work is talking about how it hasn't been this cold since they were a kid. I think people have short memories.

Winter of 2004/2005 we had a couple of cold snaps (-10 to -15) with highs below zero.

Winter of 2003/2004 had a couple with one short, but cold, stretch that looked like this:

Year, Month, Day/High/Low
2004, Jan, 28/2/-16
2004, Jan, 29/-8/-16
2004, Jan, 30/-4/-24

Your 1994 was bad...

Year, Month, Day/High/Low
1994, Jan, 14/-9/-19
1994, Jan, 15/-9/-25
1994, Jan, 16/0/-15
1994, Jan, 17/-7/-23
1994, Jan, 18/-16/-27
1994, Jan, 19/1/-27
1994, Jan, 20/4/-18

But 1996 was the bitch, and the one I always remember (because I was here). Seriously, those first few days of February?:

Year, Month, Day/High/Low
1996, Jan, 18/32/-4
1996, Jan, 19/-3/-18
1996, Jan, 20/7/-11
1996, Jan, 21/28/6
1996, Jan, 22/25/-2
1996, Jan, 23/8/-5
1996, Jan, 24/11/-6
1996, Jan, 25/8/-7
1996, Jan, 26/14/-6
1996, Jan, 27/11/-7
1996, Jan, 28/21/-7
1996, Jan, 29/21/-13
1996, Jan, 30/-7/-20
1996, Jan, 31/2/-23
1996, Feb, 1/-12/-27
1996, Feb, 2/-17/-32
1996, Feb, 3/-11/-26
1996, Feb, 4/4/-23
1996, Feb, 5/13/-6

This was the year of Dan, Aaron and Schwenk getting far too cold twice within the span of about a week. Can you name the occasions?

#1: Looking for the St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion on company time! And resting for a moment, with nearly frostbitten fingers and hands, on the actual bench under which they would later FIND the medallion.

#2: Doing a live broadcast from the Winter Carnival parade. The coldest my fingers and hands have ever been. EVER. And sitting about five feet away from on air "talent" who had space heaters under their desk. That pretty much put a nail in the coffin of my TV production career right there, I'll tell ya.

Hey Mr. 30 something on the IQ test, save all that weather info for your weather blog! :)

You and I both on the platform, without room to even shiver. But I am still shocked that Schwenk didn't end up in the hospital after his stint running bucket-cam.
