In at least these few instances...
Where but a few years ago big media conglomerations threatened the end of the independent film, Netflix has ushered in its new golden age.
Ditto big media conglomerations with respect to the independent musical artist. Enter digital music.
Half a decade ago, we thought email was threatening the end of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure in the written word. Now, nearly every one of millions of bloggers are suddenly holding their writing to a higher standard.
Of course, there's still war, disease, and poverty. But perhaps this bubble is actually bursting because it got poked by the top of Maslow's Pyramid, and the residual hope for the world has to trickle down the sides.

All great, though the numbers of people for whom these are not even the remotest care is staggering.
Half the world's population exists on less that $2 per day. Independent film and music doesn't mean much in those terms.
I listened to an interesting talk about the history of the concepts of utopia and dystopia (on NPR of course). They talked to a couple of college professors that teach classes on utopia. One teacher from a small college in ME had her students fill out a list of things that they imagine being part of their utopias. Almost universally they listed things like big houses and fancy cars. I wanted to throw up. UTOPIA? Jesus our society has been poisoned by the frivolous bullshit seen in popular culture.
Given the opportunity to brainstorm anything into your imagined utopia, is this the sort of limited thinking that we can look forward to. Truly Nero is fiddling while Rome burns.
I suspect Netflix and better blogging grammar may not ammount to a hill of beans in this world, but every day, we take what we can get.
I read recently... maybe the WSJ, maybe Slate, I dunno... that Gen Yrs were complaining that e-mail had entered the highest realms of the mainstream, and now quality grammar and spelling were expected.
Mixdorf: understood, that these concerns pale in contrast to the more primal concerns of the world; hence, my "pyramid" disclaimer. MY vision of Utopia, for the record, has crops, a hospital, and a PT boat.
Stephen: Interesting! And very apros-pos(sp?).
Hey - if a man wants to say something positive about the world - let him! This isn't ignorance, just observing some good. I, for one, was glad to read it.
Now, nearly every one of millions of bloggers are suddenly holding their writing to a higher standard.
Really?
A PT boat?
My vision of Utopia has a see filled with fishing boats surround by a fleet of pt boats.
Aaron-I'm missing the connexion between my quote and the PT boat remark.
Two separate questions from Aaron - unconnected.
He's not buying the quote.
He's not getting the Intellivision reference.
Ah-point on the quality of writing in blogs vs. writing in emails/message boards is purely subjective, and based on my own observations, but I'm pretty convinced.
PT boat: Intellivision's Utopia. See the red boats here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utopia_(video_game)
