Alternate title: Enough Hyperlinks for Ya?
Yesterday we celebrated Fathers' Day a week early, as Sharon will working all day next Sunday. The girls were great to me all day and then treated me to my first trip to the Town Hall Brewery on the University of Minnesota's West Bank. With the exception of a few nights after rehearsal & performance in the past couple of weeks, I don't "go out" much, preferring the comforts and company of my home and family. Where I most miss out, however, is in sampling fine offerings from a number of local breweries & brewpubs.
As a big fan of the exceptionally bitter style of India Pale Ale, I had really been looking forward to trying the Town Hall's Masala Mama, which is among the most highly regarded IPAs in the world (the very highest, in fact, in my BeerAdvocate.com community). This beer did not disappoint-and has now supplanted Goose Island's Honker's Ale as my highest rated beer. Read all about it. I also sampled their West Bank Pub Ale, which I will probably love & review in a future session; however I was already well into my heavily-spiced meal by that time, and the malt character was almost entirely lost on me.
I should also note that I recently tried and LOVED the locally brewed (as in, within about a mile of my home locally brewed) Surly Bender, sharing one off tap with Mighty Tom at nearby Rix Bar & Grill, following Saturday's show. Let me say, this beer is fantastic, complex, and mind-blowing. A bitter brown ale that makes my toes wiggle. But I have yet to get around to the review on this one, so I will say no more at present.

Good stuff.
You sir, are becoming quite the beer snob, with you discussions of 'malt character' and such.
An earlier Dan would have derided someone who said such things. Ahh, the road we take is a windy one.
You're probably correct about the past-Dan observation. Arthouse films, craft beer, coffee shop conversations: Past Dan would have a field day. But we live and we learn.
AND, from my current vantage point, I can see that a term like "malt character" is simply semantics-simply putting a name to an aspect of the taste-nothing more. In this instance-I just meant that sweetness in the taste was subdued by spiciness. I could mostly only taste the alcohol of the beer. No subtle mysteries there.
Everything I know about beer I've learned in the past nine months.
I'm definitely a fan of the newer Dan, I just feel it's one small part of my role to remind him where he came from.
If it was your entire role, I'd be feeling all weird, and quite annoyed.
I am glad that you like beer so much. It is really hard to imagine that there is so much information out there about it and that it is a subject that is full of avenues for one to explore.
I just got to school and I have a couple hours of cleaning up to do. After that I will not be able to respond via e-mail.
Have a great summer, Toilet Clog!
Talk to you again in late August!
Are you not going to Escalante?
We only speak via e-mail. The trip to Escalante will be entirely in silence.
It would be impossible for any of us to remain silent for an entire week. Especially hard for Dan.
About the growth of Dan: the man who has put out an eclectic mix of pop and folk tunes, and who seems to know much about music theory and recording techniques, was the biggest Journey fan in high school. As it happens, Journey had a mild resurgence in retro popularity (one of their songs topped the iTunes charts for a while just recently). So, perhaps Dan was just 17 years ahead of everyone...
He is one step ahead and he takes two steps backwards. That's the beat he dances to.
Well, I am now going to unplug and cover my computer for the summer. This is my last message from deep space #212.
Dan was ahead of many people in many respects, though not musically, not then.
TClog needs to see the Amish about getting some internet at home.
Journey was what they were. An arena rock back that was fine with appealing to a lowest common denominator. However, they had an amazing lead singer and guitarist and created music that was miles and miles ahead of any of their peers within the genre.
I still have my Journey CDs. I'm glad I do, and on the occasion that I listen to them, I enjoy them and only wince occasionally.
No shame in liking Journey, they did their catchy pop tune thing and sold buttloads of records in their day.
Now if I could just get this out of my head:

Good Lord!

Separate Ways - that damn video was played almost non-stop.
Why is she down on the docks? WHY!
Didn't know they'd converted Galaga into a Journey themed game. That shows how big they were.
Not journey but...

And wait for the door to get kicked in...wait for it....
It's not the docks. Steve Perry and his posse had a spat with his 80s girlfriend at Home Depot.
You know, it doesn't say much if kick an unlatched screen door in. I'm a little disturbed by the enigmatic ending, particularly by Ted Nugent breaking (kicking in)the fourth wall.
